TEMPLE OF VENUS AND ROMA
Image of the Temple of Venus and Roma
The construction of the Temple of Venus and Roma was began in 121 by the emperor Hadrian; it was erected over an enormous platform, obtained from the remains of the vestibule of the Domus Aurea and surrounded by two arcades with a Propylaeum in the center. The temple consisted of two chambers (cellae) with opposite apses; the apses were decorated with niches housing statues of Venus, on the side which faced towards the Colosseum and statues of Roma, on the side which faced towards the Roman Imperial Forums.
