ST JOHN LATERAN SQUARE
Image of St John Lateran Square
St John Lateran square (Piazza di San Giovanni in Laterano) is a large square around the Basilica of St John Lateran (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano), the Lateran Palace (Palazzo Lateranense) and the Lateran Baptistery (Battistero Lateranense); the Lateran monumental complex took its name from the gens Plauzi Laterani, owners of many sumptuous palaces in the surrounding area.
The square can be considered as the southern entrance of the old city and the monuments around are a good example of the different historical periods. In this place the religious ceremony of making the basilica the seat of the pope took place and popes were elected here from the Constantine (Costantino) age until the Avignon exile.
