  SERVIAN WALL
SERVIAN WALL
Image 1: The remains of the Servian Wall on the left side of the main concourse of the Termini railway station
The remains of the Servian Wall can be seen getting out of the main concourse of the Termini railway station and looking on the right; it was the first real defensive wall, dating back to the sixth century BC, was built during the reign of the King Servius Tullius and has been restored and reconstructed several times, protecting the city until 78 BC. During the Imperial age, after losing its purpose, the wall was partially pulled down and partially incorporated into other structures.
The fortified town wall of the Republican age was about 11 Km long, 4 m thick, and 10 m high, surrounding an area of approximately 400 hectares; it was built in opus quadratum with blocks of tuff and was strengthened along the weaker part of the perimeter, between the Porta Esquilina and the Porta Collina by the construction of an embankment.
The stretch of the wall nearby the Piazza dei Cinquecento, formerly below ground level, has been excavated and brought to light in 1869-70.
