SAVELLO PARK (GARDEN OF ORANGES)
Image 1: Breathtaking view of Rome from the Savello Park (Garden of Oranges)
The Savello park (Parco Savello), also known as the Garden of Oranges (Giardino degli Aranci), is located on the Aventine Hill and faces onto the Tiber River, affording a breathtaking view over the city of Rome as well as the Pincio and the Janiculum hill.
The park, a hanging garden with a surface of about 7800 sqm which can be seen from the Piazza di Monte Savello, is famous for its many bitter orange trees; it was the result of a transformation happened in 1932 to the fortress built by the mother of the Emperor Otto III. The structure was erected in addition to the one already owned by the family over the arches of the Theatre of Marcellus and built by Alberic II in the 10th century.
The fortress passed into the hands of the Savelli family (from whom it derives its name) and was subsequently inherited by the Dominicans of the Santa Sabina Church.
The park was opened to the public in 1932, after restoration works carried out by Raffaele de Vico and it often hosts theatrical performances during summer.

Location: Rione Ripa (Ripa District)
