CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DEL POPOLO
CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DEL POPOLO
Image 1: View of the facade of Santa Maria del Popolo church from Piazza del Popolo
The famous Santa Maria del Popolo church, located in Piazza del Popolo, was erected in 1099 by Pope Paschal II (Pasquale II) over the tomb of Nero (Nerone). It was enlarged in 1227 by Pope Gregory IX (Gregorio IX) and reconstructed in 1475-77 by Pope Sixtus IV (Sisto IV). From the XVI century the church was renewed, in particular in 1655-60, Gian Lorenzo Bernini was charged by Pope Alexander VII (Alessandro VII) to modify the facade.
The actual facade of the church is covered by travertine, tripartited with two orders of lesenes (columns) and has three portals; the middle portal is decorated with a refined frieze. The dome, built over an octagonal dome base, is the first of its kind in Rome.
The interior is divided into three naves and resembles lombard churches of the fifteenth century.
