PORTA DEL POPOLO
Image 1: Porta del Popolo viewed from Piazzale Flaminio
Porta del Popolo has been the main northern entrance to Rome for more than fifteen centuries. It joins piazzale Flaminio to piazza del Popolo. Its present aspect is the result of works which have been carried out in 1877-79 when the two towers of the fifteenth century were pulled down. The exterior facade, built by Pope Pius IV (Pio IV) in 1561-62, is composed of a single arched opening between two pairs of columns and a particular battlement that resembles the contemporary battlement of Porta Pia.
