PORTA METRONIA
Image 1: View of the Porta Metronia from the Piazzale Metronio
The ancient gate Porta Metronia (Metronis or Metrovia) stands at Piazzale Metronio, in a well preserved stretch of the Aurelian Walls; the gate, with its particularly simple shape that resembles posterns, replaced the Porta Querquetulana of the Servian Wall.
Formerly opened inside a tower, in 1157, restoration works replaced the original appearance with modern arched openings. Two further couples of arched openings have been recently built for trying to relieve the traffic congestion.
