PALATINE HILL
Image of the Palatine Hill
The Palatine Hill is one of the Seven Hills and, according to the legend, it was the place where Romolo founded the city of Rome; this area is one of the most ancient parts of the city, indeed recent excavations proved that it has been lived since approximately 1000 BC. The area around the hill was the centre of power of the old town and the seat of many Imperial Palaces such as the palaces of Augustus, Tiberius and Domitian of whom the ruins have been preserved and are still visible. During the Middle Ages the place was abandoned, whereas during the Renaissance period it belonged to the Farnese family who built the Horti Farnesiani which are still partially preserved.
Nowadays the Palatine Hill has become a large open-air museum.
