  LATERAN BAPTISTERY
LATERAN BAPTISTERY
Image 1: View of the Lateran Baptistery
The Lateran Baptistery (Battistero Lateranense), also known as San Giovanni in Fonte, stands at the left of the loggia and it was built and inaugurated by Constantine in the fourth century; enlarged and improved several times until the 17th century it was rebuilt in 1884 by Virgilio and Francesco Vespignani who joined this later construction with the earlier structure.
The interior, accessible by a portal, has an octagonal plan and a ring of eight columns in the centre, supporting an octagonal architrave; above, there is a second order of smaller white marble columns. In the middle of a circular enclosure there is a green basalt urn used for baptism by immersion.
On the left of the Baptistery a railing stands as the entrance of the Pontifical Lateran University (Pontificio Ateneo Lateranense); inside the fence, a thermal room that dates back to the first middle of the third century.
