Image 1: View of the facade of Santa Maria in Montesanto church from Piazza del Popolo
The church of Santa Maria in Montesanto was begun in 1662 and was interrupted because of the death of the pope; works were resumed in 1673 thanks to fundings from cardinal Girolamo Gastaldi. The revised project was worked out by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1675 and the church, with its interior decorations and ornaments, was finished in 1679. A belfry was finished in 1761 by Francesco Navone, and in 1825 the church was renovated.
The interior has an elliptical plan with six chapels, three on each side, four choirs and a large presbyterium. Between the segments of the Cupola, niches that contains statues of saints.
