Piazza del Colosseo (Colosseum Square) rose over the hollow between the Caelian (Celio) and Palatine (Palatino) hills, over an area where urban development occurred even before the 2nd century BC; nevertheless, this site kept its lonely aspect until the end of the XIX century. Subsequently it lost this characteristic after the opening of the Via dell'Impero (Street of Empire) and Via dei Trionfi (Triumphal Road, actually known as San Gregorio street) those sped up the degradation to the monuments.
From 1981, after renovation works and the excavation of the Meta Sudans, the area has become a pedestrian district.

Location: Rione Celio (Caelian district)
